Primarch of the Thousand son. Named so due to his red skin. Born and raised in the sorcery world of Prospero. Magnus became a great sorcerer in his own right. When the Emperor found him, Magnus was unique, for he was well aware of who and what he is. So it is that when the Emperor came, he was already well aware of who the Emperor is and acceded without delay, conversing like old friends who had known each other for years. The Emperor however, was not exactly pleased at his son's apparent recklessness with his so called sorcerous capabilities. Worrying about the Warp's influence on his son, the Emperor confided to Magnus, and only to him, the true secrets of the Warp in its entirety. Magnus feigned horror, and promise he will be careful. But in truth, he continued on with his dabbling of Warp powers, believing they can be mastered and controlled. Uniquely, from Magnus' efforts was born a new class of Space Marines that would aid the Imperium greatly in the years to come: The Librarian.
When first found by the Emperor, Magnus had two eyes. The story of how he became a cyclop, well... At first, the Thousand Sons owe their name due to the fact that their standing forces number no more than a thousand at a time. Due to rampant mutation, the marines were deemed too unstable, and many petitioned them to be disbanded, and its members euthanized. Magnus pleaded to give him a chance to stop this. He succeeded, but at the cost of one of his eyes traded to a warp entity he did not at the time as Tzeentch. His eye dissipated in a wall of skin, as if there was never even a socket to house the eyeball. However not all chapters are overjoyed with the Thousand Sons' reliance on psykers and Librarians. Lemann Russ and Corax for instance, refuse to field their legions alongside any army with Librarians in them. The Primarchs were divided over this, and clashes seem to be inevitable. The Emperor then summoned all of his primarchs to the council on planet Nikaea. It was in truth, a trial for the one eyed wizard. Librarians were forbidden, and Magnus was ordered, under the pain of death, to return to Prospero and restructure his legion to one compliant with the Emperor's wishes. At this point, Magnus had YET to turn from the Emperor, though he was slighted nonetheless.
Ironically, his desire to aid the Emperor proved to be his downfall. In his meditation, Magnus, in his dream, peered into the warp and saw the dark horrifying future and the aftermath of the Horus Heresy. Desperate to send this message immediately to the Emperor, he broke the Emperor's edict and sent the message, psychically and magically. It reached the Emperor, but furious at his son's transgression, sent Lemann Russ to bring Magnus to questioning. Problem is: the Emperor ordered it through the already corrupted Horus, who then twisted his order. Lemann Russ went into Prospero under the order to DESTROY Prospero and kill the Primarch. He did so, earning the unending enmity and hatred of Magnus, who by then, had completely turned away from the Emperor and embraced Tzeentch as a patron.
Magnus' axe was ironically something given to him by... wait for it... Angron. It was an axe Angron used before he wielded the twin Gorechild and Gorefather.
Hope it helps.
